On Friday night, May 10, 2019, three winners of Chor Leoni’s C4 Competition received Barbara Pentland Awards of Excellence for Outstanding Composition. Jordan Nobles, CMC Associate Composer and CMC BC Librarian was on hand to present the awards to composers Kevin Pirker, Elizabeth Knudson, and Allan Bevan.

The judges’ panel of JUNO Award-winning composer Jocelyn Morlock, Chor Leoni Composer-in-Residence Zachary Wadsworth, and businessman James Carter awarded a tie for first place to Elizabeth Knudson and Allan Bevan, with third place being awarded to Kevin Pirker. 

Knudson set the poetry of Paul Laurence Dunbar for her composition, Ere Sleep Comes Down, while Bevan’s work Full Fathom Five used text from Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Kevin Pirker’s My Light with Yours drew on poetry by Edgar Lee Masters.

The competition received 36 entries from across Canada, and details of next year’s C/4 event (to be held May 27, 2020) will be released shortly.
