BC Director of the Canadian Music Centre, Sean Bickerton, will present What Is Music? as part of Capilano University’s Re-Sounding Music lecture series on Friday, January 30, from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at the BlueShore Financial Centre for Performing Arts (2055 Purcell Way, North Vancouver).

Music moves us more deeply than any other form of creativity or communication. It is fundamental to our humanity—yet it is not uniquely human. Birds sing. Whales communicate across vast oceans. Music seems woven into the fabric of life itself.

So… what is it?

Join Sean in an exploration of something indispensable to the most meaningful experiences of our lives—a medium that touches our deepest emotions, yet is so universal that we take it for granted.

“I have spent my entire life immersed in music—first as a violinist in my youth, then later, after an injury ended my pursuit of that vocation, producing and presenting concerts on three continents, and helping others realize their own artistic potential.

More recently, for the past decade, I have supported those that create music through my work at the Canadian Music Centre. Yet, I still struggle to define this singular pursuit—the unifying thread that has driven and sustained me for nearly seven decades.

Please join me as we explore this question together.”
