In this exciting chamber concert, the VICO’s intercultural wind quintet performs the world premieres of new works created by participants in its 2025 Sounds Global Composers’ Workshop: composers not only from BC (an impressive contingent including Nimus Belanger, Joanne Na, Niloufar Zahed, Vahid Massah, Emil Qing Zhuo Wu, and John Patrick MacLachlan) but also as far away as Italy and Iran.

Join us on May 30th to witness what they’ve created! Featuring Paolo Bortolussi (flute), Tim Chan (sheng), Amir Eslami (ney), Liam Hockley (clarinet), and Geronimo Mendoza (oboe).

This concert is the first of four in the VICO’s Spring Concert Series; there will be more ground-breaking music on June 5, 6 and 7! Please visit https://www.vi-co.org for details.

About The Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra

The Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra, founded in 2001, is a contemporary classical music ensemble – one of the world’s first concert orchestras devoted specifically to performing new intercultural music on a grand scale. It is currently the only professional ensemble of its kind in Canada. The ensemble includes Western strings and winds (violin, viola, cello, contrabass, oboe, flute, clarinet) alongside Chinese erhu, pipa, sanxian, zheng, and sheng/suona; Persian kamanche, tar/setar, oud, and tombak; percussion from many world music traditions; and a variety of other instruments as required.

Since repertoire for the VICO’s novel instrumentation does not already exist, creating new works (100+ new Canadian compositions since 2001, and counting!) is an integral component of all the VICO’s programming – providing a framework for bringing musicians and composers together to learn from each other, in a uniquely collaborative process. https://www.vi-co.org
