CMC BC exists to champion our composers, foster the next generation of music and sound creators, and to act as a resource centre, sharing everything we have with the new music ecosystem of the province that brings our composer’s music to life.

As our programs have evolved over the past few years, here is a brief overview of some of the ways we might be able to help you.

We help bring our composer’s music to life by offering up to fifteen (15) $1000 Performance Sponsorships each year for concerts wherein at least half of the music is written by BC composers.

We foster new orchestral commissions by helping to manage the Hugh Davidson Fund of the Victoria Foundation, which awards more than $50,000 in commissions for new works each year to the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and Victoria Symphony, with more than twenty-five new works premiered since the fund was launched in 2016.

We support music education through three programs:

First, we offer five $1,000 Composition Workshop Sponsorships each year, provided at least half of the participants are from BC.

We present scholarships totalling $5,500 to composition students each year, rotating between UBC, UVic, or SFU, with the recipients selected by the faculty of the school.

The three scholarships are: The Murray Adaskin Prize of $2500, supported through a generous donation from Dorothea Adaskin, his widow. The Pentland Prize of $2,000, supported through a generous donation from Dr. Geoffrey Newman. And the Southam Prize of $1000, supported by a generous donation from the Martha Lou Henley Foundation.

And we offer framed Pentland Awards along with $100 bursaries to winners of composition competitions, and to winners of instrumental competitions that perform a Canadian composition.

We also offer the Murray Adaskin Salon for Artist Residencies of up to twenty days, and for inexpensive rentals for workshops and concerts.

If you are reading this, you likely know we publish our newsletter Centrepulse every two weeks, the go-to listing for new music concerts in BC and for composer opportunities worldwide.

We offer the best print and binding service for scores and parts in Western Canada. And we encourage new composers to join our community and become members of the CMC with new juries held twice a year.
