We asked George Laverock, who knew Hugh Davidson well, if he would write an article about Hugh’s unique contribution to musical life in light of the Vancouver Symphony’s upcoming premiere of Marcus Goddard’s Violin Concerto, which was commissioned with support from the recently launched Hugh Davidson Fund at the Victoria Foundation:
—————————————-
A long-time volunteer at CMC’s BC Creative Hub, Hugh Davidson was a Canadian composer, music critic, radio producer, writer and arts administrator. When Hugh passed away in 2014, he left in his will a sizeable endowment fund (The Hugh Davidson Fund – administered by the Victoria Foundation) dedicated to “promote the wide knowledge of and education in newly composed Canadian orchestral music, and in particular, to aid the public rehearsal, performance and recording of newly composed Canadian orchestral music by the Vancouver and Victoria Symphony Societies”.
Next Monday, January 22nd, 7:30 PM at the Orpheum Theatre, we have a chance to enjoy the fruits of Hugh’s generosity with an upcoming concert supported by his legacy fund: the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Bramwell Tovey, with violinist Rachel Barton-Pine in a featured concert of the VSO’s 5th Annual New Music Festival.
This program entitled Dawn to Dusk: From Aurora to Winter Sky will include works by Eve de Castro-Robinson, Kaija Saariaho, Jocelyn Morlock, Andrew Staniland, Samy Moussa, and a new Violin Concerto by Marcus Goddard, which was commissioned with support from the Hugh Davidson Fund.
