Born in Rossland, BC, Jean Ethridge studied composition with Jean Coulthard at UBC after taking her ARCT in piano performance, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Composition in 1967. In this concert, we will hear some of Jean’s major works for violin and for cello, art songs, and excerpts from her opera, The Ballad of Isabel Gunn, based on an extraordinary but true story from the Hudson’s Bay Company’s archives. Jean’s music is highly accessible, with beautiful melodies, rhythmic vitality, and elements of folk song-like material.

Hubert Klyne Headley Celebration
7:00pm • Friday, November 17, 2017 • Murray Adaskin Salon Posthumous Tribute
Hubert Klyne Headley (1906-1996) enjoyed enviable success as a composer, conductor and educator in the United States before settling in British Columbia around 1960, spending the remainder of his long life here, composing, conducting, leading church choirs, and teaching music in local school districts and colleges. We are thrilled to present two of Klyne’s greatest chamber works, including the charming, neo-classical Septet and the dramatic, dark-hued Piano Quintet. Taken together, they offer a fascinating insight into a searingly brilliant and unexplored musical mind.
Performers: Mark McGregor, flute; Roger Cole, oboe; Liam Hockley, clarinet; Sophie Dansereau, bassoon; Joan Blackman, violin; Tegen Davidge, viola; Stefan Hintersteininger, cello; Corey Hamm, piano

Described as “a composer with that rare combination of clear-eyed intelligence and deeply-felt emotion,” Leslie Uyeda has spent her life crafting delicate, intimate masterworks inspired by her dual passions for poetry and the human voice. Many of Leslie’s pieces were composed with specific performers in mind, artists with whom she has had longstanding collaborations and deep connections. It is they, along with the composer herself at the piano, who will bring Leslie’s music to life in this very special concert that also celebrates International Women’s Day.

Hildegard Westerkamp Birthday Celebration
SOLD OUT
7:00pm • Friday, April 6, 2018 • Murray Adaskin Salon
Hildegard Westerkamp hears the world differently than most people. Where many of us might hear noise, she uncovers extraordinary beauty and meaning. It’s all in how we listen to our environment. After completing her music studies, Hildegard joined the World Soundscape Project under the direction of Canadian composer R. Murray Schafer at Simon Fraser University (SFU) in Vancouver. Her involvement with this project not only activated deep concerns about noise and the general state of the acoustic environment in her, but it also changed her ways of thinking about music, listening and soundmaking. Join us for this very special event as we celebrate Hildegard’s birthday!
