On Friday, February 7, at Composium, I had the pleasure of presenting CMC BC scholarships worth a total of $5,000 to three students at SFU’s School for the Contemporary Arts Music & Sound program. Each year we present these scholarships to students at a different BC university with a graduate program in composition.

The Murray & Dorothea Adaskin Prize of $2500 was awarded to George Rahi; the Barbara Pentland Prize of $1500 was awarded to Aidan Edwards; and the Ann Southam Prize of $1000 awarded to Toni C. Yake. Next year, the recipients will be from UVic.

Symposium is an annual gathering of the composition students and faculty from UVic, SFU, and UBC. Next year’s event will take place at the University of Victoria’s School of Music.

Each of our scholarships is supported by a different donor. The Adaskin Prize by an endowment CMC BC established thanks to a generous donation from Dorothea Adaskin, Murray’s widow. The Pentland Prize is sponsored by Dr. Geoffrey Newman, a professor at UBC’s Sauder School of Business. And the Southam Prize is sponsored by Martha Lou Henley.

We are extremely grateful to them for their generosity in helping us foster this next generation of sound and music creators and practitioners.
