Indian Summer Festival: A Raucous Evening with Kiran Deol
Indian Summer Festival
A Raucous Evening with Kiran Deol
7:00pm • Tuesday July 08 •.Vancouver Playhouse, Vancouver
Indian Summer Festival produces some of Vancouver’s most vital
and distinctive arts + culture events, dedicated to the exceptional
creativity of South Asian arts and artists. Indian Summer was
founded to address a gap in Vancouver’s cultural landscape and
to break stereotypical perceptions of South Asian art as ossified,
traditional, and nostalgic. The festival has since grown to serve as
a meeting place for many more cultures and has seen a
programmatic evolution from an expression of diasporic South
Asian identity in British Columbia to its current shape as a festival
that takes a decidedly pluralistic approach, welcoming and
exploring issues that lie at the intersections of multiple
communities, through a South Asian lens.
From leading voices in literature to genre-defying performance
art, immersive installations to classical ragas, Indian Summer
Festival has presented emerging artists as well as Nobel, Booker,
Grammy and Oscar prize nominees on its stages. Our festival
always has a strong discursive line running alongside the
conceptual, by way of panels, ideas series, and artist talks,
supported by a distinct curatorial theme each year.

TPE Miniature presents members of the ensemble in solo, duo, and small chamber contexts in a program of diversity and discovery, including premieres of two works created for TPE’s 1 + 1 + 1… a film project – Trikala Jati (for JB) by Curtis Andres written for percussionist Jonathan Bernard and dancer Sudnya Mulye, and Matthew-John Knight’s Abstraction, a striking staged theatre work composed for bass clarinetist AK Coope. The program also features duets, trios, quartets, and a major quintet from 100 years ago by Sergei Prokofiev. In honour of February Black History Month, two rarely heard works by Undine Smith Moore will be performed – her solo piano tour de force from 1953 Before I’d be a Slave and her spiritual-based Afro-American Suite.
