Jacqueline Leggatt: 60th Birthday Celebration

Our 2019-2020 Celebration Series opens with a special 60th Birthday Celebration of Canadian Composer Jacquie Leggatt on Sunday, October 27, 2019, at 7:00 pm in the Vancouver Academy of Music’s recently refurbished Koerner Recital Hall. This Celebration is a co-presentation with the Vancouver Academy of Music where Leggatt is Head of Theory. The concert features CMC BC’s new Ensemble-In-Residence, Vetta Chamber Players, along with Vanier Park Strings and an installation for sixteen-channel speaker array.

Dr. Jacqueline Leggatt received her B.Mus in Piano from Queen’s University at Kingston, and her M.Mus and DMA in Composition from the University of British Columbia where she studied with Eugene Wilson. She has written works for film, plays and dance although her primary activity is in chamber music. Her works have been performed throughout Canada and the U.S. Jacqueline is presently teaching at the Vancouver Academy of Music.

Jocelyn Morlock & Jordan Nobles: Joint 50th Birthday Celebration

Collaborating with the Redshift Music Society, we’re pleased to present a unique joint 50th Birthday Celebration for award-winning Canadian composers Jocelyn Morlock and Jordan Nobles at The Annex on Monday, December 9, at 7:00 pm in a concert featuring Vetta Chamber Players, Redshift Music Society, and other invited guests.

JUNO® Award-winning composer Jocelyn Morlock’s music is hailed as being “airy but rhythmic, tuneful but complex” and with “uncanny yet toothsome beauty” (Alex Varty, Georgia Straight), “A lyrical wonder, exquisite writing” with “an acute feeling for sonority” (David Gordon Duke, Vancouver Sun) and an approach that is “deftly idiomatic” (Lloyd Dykk, Vancouver Sun). Her music is recorded on 20 CDs including Cobalt, whose title track won the 2015 Western Canadian Music Award for Best Classical Composition, and her just-released Halcyon.

Jordan Nobles has won numerous awards for his work including a JUNO Award for ‘Classical Composition of the Year’, a Western Canadian Music Award, the International Composition Competition of the Unbound Flute Festival (Brisbane, Australia July 2016); the Sacra/Profana (San Diego 2013) , Vancouver Bach Choir (Vancouver 2008), and Polyphonos (Seattle 2011) International Composition Competitions. He placed 2nd in the International Soli fan tutti Kompositionswettbewerbs in Darmstadt, Germany and was a finalist in the C4 Choir Composition Competition in New York., as well as has been chosen to be performed in Wrocław, Poland at the International Society for Contemporary Music’s 2014 World Music Days.

Ernst Schneider: 80th Birthday Celebration

On Saturday, February 8 at 7:30 pm we co-present an 80th Birthday Celebration for Ernst Schneider in Penticton’s Cleland Community Theatre with the Okanagan Symphony, which will also be celebrating their 60th anniversary at that performance under the baton of Music Director Rosemary Thomson. The concert features the World Premiere of Schneider’s Second Piano Concerto performed by Jana Luksts and will be preceded by a pre-concert performance of the composer’s chamber works performed by graduates of the Okanagan Symphony Youth Orchestra program.

Ross Alden: 100th Birthday Celebration

Continuing a tradition of recognizing the important work of neglected Canadian composers, CMC BC Concerts will present a posthumous 100th Birthday Celebration of Canadian composer Ross Alden (also known as Murray Carmack) with performances of his lush chamber music by Vetta Chamber Players in CMC BC’s uniquely intimate Murray Adaskin Salon on Monday, February 10, 2020 at 7:00 pm.

Ross Alden (1920–2008) Ross Alden, pianist and teacher (11 February 1920 – 15 October 2008) born in the Canadian wilderness; fellow of Trinity, London; baccalaureate at Durham; magister at Harvard; matriculant at Oxford; sojourner in five countries; beloved of thousands of children. As well as composing Ross Alden performed in recital the 48 Preludes and Fugues of Johann Sebastian Bach.

Stephen Chatman: 70th Birthday Celebration

Celebrating one of Canada’s most prolific and performed composers, CMC BC is joining together with the Vancouver Chamber Choir and the UBC School of Music, to co-present Stephen Chatman’s 70th Birthday Celebration featuring members of the Vancouver Chamber Choir and Vetta Chamber Players on Monday, March 30, 2020 at 7:30 pm in UBC’s Roy Barnett Recital Hall.

One of Canada’s most frequently performed composers, Stephen Chatman, C.M., D.M.A. is Professor of Composition at the University of British Columbia School of Music. He has received many composition awards, including 2005, 2006 and 2010 Western Canadian Music Awards “Classical Composition of the Year”, 2010 and 2012 SOCAN Jan V. Matejcek New Classical Music Award, three BMI Awards (New York), multiple JUNO nominations, Dorothy Somerset Award, the Charles Ives Scholarship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and is the only Canadian ever short-listed for the BBC Masterprize (London). Dr. Chatman was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada in 2012.

Leila Lustig Celebration

Capping off our 2019-2020 Celebration Series is a Celebration of Canadian composer Leila Lustig featuring performances by Soprano Marnie Setka-Mooney, with Victoria musicians Kathryn LeGros, Diane Berry and friends on Monday, April 20, 2020 at 7pm in the uniquely intimate setting of the Murray Adaskin Salon.

Since moving to Victoria, BC, Leila has concentrated on vocal chamber music, opera and choral music, including a cantata on homelessness, “Persons of No Fixed Abode,” two choral works based on texts by the BC journalist and poet, Stephen Hume, and quite a few works for two-part and three-part women’s choir including a “Magnificat” combining Latin and English texts. Having participated in the 2003 Composer-Librettist Laboratory sponsored by Pacific Opera Victoria, she collaborated with Victoria playwright Geoff Hargreaves on three one-act operas: ““Our Lady of Esquimalt Road,” “The Office Party” and “Gonzo Charlie Gray.” In Vancouver, her music has been performed at the Sonic Boom Festival and by the Erato Music Ensemble, among other venues. The Vancouver and Victoria Symphonies have performed readings of her orchestral works.

Celebration Series

Launched in the fall of 2016, CMC BC’s unique Celebration Series offers six concerts every season, each performance offering a survey of the body of work of one iconic Canadian Composer from BC, with the series balanced equally between featuring women and men.

New Concerts in Victoria

In addition to our Celebration Series, CMC BC has inaugurated a series of new collaborations with concert presenters in Victoria starting this past summer with a co-presentation of the Oak Bay New Music Festival in partnership with the Victoria Composers Collective. The coming season will also see two concerts co-presented with Of The Now Concert Series.
