Members elected a more diverse Advisory Council at the 2019 Annual Meeting of the Canadian Music Centre in BC, including Indigenous and GLBTQ2S+ representation, a preponderance of women, and growing participation by racialized minorities. The new Chair of the Council is composer Jennifer Butler, elected with the members listed below.
As Jennifer Butler stated: “Composers work in isolation most of the time, so a community-building organization like the CMC is incredibly important to its members. Ever since I moved to Vancouver 20 years ago, the CMC has been a hub for composers to find connection, and that holds especially true today. The CMC celebrates and supports Canadian composers and Canadian music in so many ways. It provides essential services; presents workshops and concerts; fosters professional development opportunities; collaborates with the Canadian League of Composers and the Canadian New Music Network; and marks milestones of its members.
I am honoured and excited to be the new Chair of the Advisory Council. This is an inspiring group of people who bring a huge amount of knowledge and experience to the table. My goal is to energize the council so we can work effectively together towards strengthening our members’ connections with each other and our audiences, building richer diversity in our community, and supporting and celebrating our fellow artists.
One of the first acts of the new Advisory Council will be participation in an Anti-Racism workshop given by Toronto Black Lives Matter Activist Syrus Marcus Ware on Tuesday, November 17. Syrus is also a celebrated visual and performance artist and a champion of disability rights.
Members of the BC Advisory Council provide invaluable advice as CMC BC seeks to realize the CMC Mission, Vision, and Values, and provide financial oversight of the region’s finances. Two members of the Advisory Council also serve on the CMC Canada Board of Directors and the Chair also serves, along with the BC Director, on the Hugh Davidson Committee of the Victoria Foundation.
