The Vancouver Art Gallery introduces a new contemporary music series — New Music at the Gallery — presented in partnership with the Canadian Music Centre BC. New Music at the Gallery will draw on contemporary art themes and highlight a selection of twentieth- and twenty-first-century music.
The inaugural concert on Friday, May 27 from 5 – 6pm will feature a solo violin performance by Jack Campbell of a new composition he wrote in collaboration with the Vancouver Art Gallery and inspired by the Gallery’s collection of works by celebrated American painter and graphic artist Robert Rauschenberg. A selection of Rauschenberg’s works will be on view to complement the musical experience.
The program is inspired by works of Rauschenberg and draws comparisons with the music of the experimental New York School of composers active at the same time, including Cage and Feldman. Campbell’s composition, Sonata for Solo Violin: Rauschenberg (2021), was largely composed during his one-month Artist in Residency in the Adaskin Salon at CMC BC.
New Music at the Gallery will be presented in Room 4East and the Pavilion at the Gallery on Friday, May 27, 5pm.
