The Canadian Music Centre in BC is thrilled to announce an evening with composer and pianist John Stetch, inaugural winner of CMC BC’s Pentland Prize, a $1,000 scholarship awarded annually to a graduate composition student at UBC, SFU, or UVIC. Join us for this intimate, free concert on Friday, June 1st, from 7:00 to 8:00 PM at the Murray Adaskin Salon. John Stetch will perform a selection of his own solo piano compositions, speak about his work, and receive the award. Don’t miss this chance to hear a remarkable artist who will transform the way you think about the piano. Light refreshments will be served.

John Stetch

Steinway Artist John Stetch is a 6-time Juno Nominee, and has written over 50 compositions for solo piano, jazz combo and more recently some classical chamber formats. Originally from Edmonton, he has worked at the top clubs of New York City including Mezzrow, Smalls, Smoke and the Jazz Standard, played on many continents, toured Canada a dozen times as a leader, and was a member of Rufus Reid’s group for nearly a decade. He taught at Cornell University for several years, won the Prix Du Jazz at the Montreal Jazz Festival in 1998, and was a finalist in the Thelonious International Monk Competition twice – once as a composer and once as a performer. Stetch divides his time between Vancouver and NYC, and is especially interested in bringing classical and jazz together, and fusing ethnic and popular music with his personal jazz stamp. He is currently pursuing a Master’s of Music in classical Composition at UBC and is on the faculty of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra School of Music. The Pentland Prize in Composition

Dedicated to BC Legacy Composer Barbara Pentland, the Pentland Awards seek to recognize extraordinary contributions to Canadian music, excellence in composition, and best performances of Canadian music within the Province of BC through five distinct awards. The Pentland Prize in Composition is a $1,000 scholarship awarded annually to a BC graduate student in Composition at the School of Music at the University of Victoria, the School of Music at the University of British Columbia, or SFU’s School for the Contemporary Arts. The Pentland Prize rotates between those three schools each year, with the graduate student to be presented the award selected by the Composition faculty of that school.
